Coaches
The Role What Is Coaching?
The responsibilities of a basketball coach include enhancing player development, creating strategies for the team, instructing players, and providing mentorship.
To be successful as a basketball coach, you should have solid knowledge of basketball and its rules, be able to develop both team and individual strategies, and have good communication skills. Coaching can be daunting at first — some coaches draw on playing experience, others have watched from afar, and many are simply helping out with limited experience. All are welcome, and training is available to help every coach succeed.
Player Development
The most important part of any sport is the player. A coach's primary focus is giving players the best possible experience — keeping the game fun, building skills, and supporting long-term participation.
Strategy & Tactics
Coaches develop and refine team and individual strategies — from introducing fundamental offensive and defensive concepts through to advanced game analysis at higher performance levels.
Compliance Requirements
Coaches are required to hold a valid Working With Children Check if coaching minors or when there is any possibility of being in the company of minors. All coaching pathways also require compliance with Child Safeguarding requirements.

Basketball Australia Coach Development Framework

Through the Basketball Australia Coach Development Framework (CDF), Basketball Victoria supports coaches at all stages of their journey — providing flexible, nationally recognised learning pathways that reflect where and how coaches are involved in the sport.
- Make coaching pathways easier to understand
- Recognise that coaches learn in different ways and at different times
- Support long-term coach development, not just one-off courses
- Align with national and international best practice
- Online learning via the Basketball Australia LMS
- Face-to-face learning opportunities statewide
- Practical and applied learning experiences
- Coach mentoring and development resources
Coaching Pathways Levels of Coaching

There are five coaching pathways — from community participation through to international competition. Each pathway is designed to match the coaching environment you work in, and progression is based on ongoing learning and engagement, not just attending a single course.
Participation Coach
Designed for coaches supporting Aussie Hoops and entry-level or participation basketball environments. Focuses on creating safe, inclusive, and fun experiences.
Well suited to:
- First-time coaches
- Parents, teachers, and volunteers
- Secondary school students
- Coaches new to basketball or returning to the game
How it works: Online modules (available 24/7, complete at your own pace) plus a 2-hour practical session that coaches book in for around the state.
Competition Coach
Supports coaches working in junior and senior club competitions. Blends online education, practical application, and face-to-face learning.
Key development areas:
- Teaching and refining basketball skills
- Introducing offensive and defensive team concepts
- Planning and delivering effective training sessions
- Supporting athlete development in competitive environments
All coaches commence at Competition Bronze. Progression to Silver and Gold is achieved by earning Coach Development Points through actively coaching, face-to-face learning, online modules, and applied learning activities.
Representative Coach
Designed for coaches in representative programs and state pathway or higher-performance environments. Supports coaches to perform and excel.
Learning may include:
- Advanced technical and tactical concepts
- Game analysis and preparation
- Athlete wellbeing and performance support
- Leadership, mentoring, and applied learning
Coaches commence at Representative Bronze. Eligibility requires holding Competition level accreditation for 12 months, being over 21, and coaching at VJBL level or higher. Movement into this pathway reflects the environment you coach in, not just previous accreditation.
Performance Coach
Supports coaches operating in elite, high-performance, and national pathway environments. Internationally aligned and FIBA-recognised, delivered under the direction of Basketball Australia.
Entry is based on coaching role, experience, and endorsement through appropriate high-performance channels. Coaches should have experience in the Performance Pathways programs to be eligible.
The Performance level accreditation is facilitated by Basketball Australia, with nominations taken by Basketball Victoria.
Master Coach Recognition
The Master Coach designation recognises coaches who have demonstrated sustained excellence in elite and international basketball environments over an extended period. This is the pinnacle of Australian coaching recognition.
- Internationally aligned and FIBA-recognised
- Awarded at the discretion of Basketball Australia
- Administered by Basketball Australia and supported by Basketball Victoria
Get Involved Why Coach?
Coaching provides an opportunity to give back to the game, develop valuable skills, and make a real difference in the lives of players. Whether you want to help your child's team or aspire to coach at the highest levels, there's a pathway for you.
From 2023 Mandatory Accreditation
Beginning in 2023, Basketball Victoria implemented mandatory coach education training for any coach working in a league run by Basketball Victoria. Upon completing the training, coaches gain their Basketball Australia accreditation and receive a certificate and additional resources to support ongoing development.
The most important part of any sport is the player. One of the main reasons players leave the sport is that it's no longer fun for them. As a sport, we want to provide the best possible experience — and the first and most frequent interaction players have is with their coach. By providing structured training, coaches gain confidence and tools to stay in the sport longer, forming better networks and becoming better coaches over time. We can all learn from those who have gone before us.

Do I need to complete the prior course before the one I want? Coaches do need to complete the Competition level before attending the Representative level, but can go straight to the Competition level if confident enough to do so. Coaches can skip the Participation level and go straight to Competition.
Coaches need to be 14 years old at a minimum to complete a course.
Whilst it is recommended that all coaches complete the Basketball Australia accredited training, it is only mandatory in leagues managed by Basketball Victoria.
There are some Associations around Victoria that do require you to have a level of coaching accreditation, so please check with your Association if this applies to you.
Yes — if you've completed the online training and booked in for a practical session, you will still be able to coach until a practical session can be attended.
Coaches do need to accrue Coach Development Points (CDP) to remain an active coach. If you have completed a course but been inactive for 4 years (not accrued any CDP points), you will need to complete the course again.
If only filling in for a game, you will not be required to hold the minimum level required, but you will need to hold a coaching accreditation.
As an example, if the Head Coach misses a game, the Assistant Coach may fill in without needing to be at the same accreditation level as the Basketball Victoria minimum requirements.
It is recommended that anyone who may be used as a fill-in coach throughout the season (parent or club person) gains their minimum coach accreditation level in case they are needed.
Understandably, some coaches have been in the sport and progressed without ever completing any formal training. It's always encouraged that coaches find different avenues to learn, and this is another that can be useful for coaches to upskill and find different ways to do things or reinforce their own knowledge.
There are also options for Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) that some coaches may be eligible for — speak with Basketball Victoria for more information.

The new level names map to the previous system as follows: Participation (was Community or Level 0), Competition (was Club or Level 1), Representative (was Association or Level 2), Performance (was Level 3), and Master (a new designation).
Both levels are administered by Basketball Australia and supported by Basketball Victoria.
The Performance level accreditation is aimed at coaches working in semi-professional, junior National team, or State Team environments. Coaches need to have gained their Representative level accreditation before attending this course.
The Master Coach designation recognises coaches who have demonstrated sustained excellence in elite and international basketball environments over an extended period.
