About the Role
 

The Director of Warriors Junior Basketball is the senior on-court leadership role within WBA's junior programs — responsible for the strategic direction of our coaching framework across the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL), the Country Representative Program (CRP/JCC), and providing coaching input into the Future Warriors Academy (FWA).

The Director leads a structure of up to ten Head Age Group Coaches across five age groups and both genders, building and sustaining a high-performing coaching culture. This role reports directly to the General Manager and works alongside the Representative Programs & Community Engagement Coordinator. This is a volunteer position supported by an honorarium determined by the Board — a focused, seasonal leadership role rather than a large weekly time commitment, with the time involved to be agreed with the General Manager.

What You'll Do
  • 🎯 Coaching leadership & program oversightDevelop and maintain WBA's coaching framework and style of play across all junior programs, ensuring age-appropriate progression from U10 to U20.
  • 👥 Mentor the coaching groupLead, mentor and provide formal feedback to up to ten Head Age Group Coaches; run coaches meetings, workshops and development sessions.
  • 📝 Coach recruitment & selection oversightRecruit and appoint Head Age Group Coaches and oversee Team Coach appointments; provide oversight of tryout and selection processes.
  • 🚀 Player development & pathwaysIdentify talent for Basketball Victoria pathway programs and maintain a formalised liaison with the Big V Men's and Women's Head Coaches on U20 progression.
  • 🤝 Stakeholder liaison & reportingLiaise with Basketball Victoria and the relevant contacts assigned to the VJBL and Country Representative (CRP/JCC) competitions, and report regularly to the General Manager on program performance and pathways.

Who We're Looking For
Essential
  • Minimum Basketball Australia Representative-level coaching accreditation (formerly Association / Level 2)
  • Experience coaching or leading programs at a junior or senior representative level
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor and develop coaches across multiple age groups and genders
  • Strong understanding of player development and age-appropriate coaching methodologies
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Availability for flexible hours including evenings and weekends
  • Current Working With Children Check (or willingness to obtain prior to commencement)
  • Current driver's licence
Desirable
  • Knowledge of the VJBL competition and/or Country Basketball Victoria's CRP/JCC structure
  • Experience developing or implementing a style of play framework
  • Experience with video analysis tools such as Hudl or SportsCode
  • Familiarity with WBA's existing style of play and coaching philosophy
  • Experience in talent identification and engagement with BV pathway programs
